Aikido is a Japanese martial art defined in the 20th century by "O' Sensei", Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). “Aiki” means “blending body with mind to the movements of energy.” “Do” means “a way or path chosen towards self-realization.” Aikido is a system of self-defense employing techniques based upon circular motions that blend with the attack and energy of your opponent.
Here are some examples of our aikido style [Birankai].
But really, the best thing is to visit and either observe or try a class:)
Our training space (Dojo) is part of the Wild Willow Studio, an artists cooperative focused on movement arts.
Instructor: Dave Dewberry
Dave Dewberry, 4th Dan, Fukushidoin started practicing Aikido in 1979.
"My practice expanded to teaching Aikido in 1994 when my son began training in Southwestern Aikikai's children's program. Demonstrating techniques in a way that people can parse has helped my own understanding of Aikido. Watching students gain self-confidence as they learn to move from their center and fall safely is continually rewarding."
